What is an “Artist Date”?
According to Julia Cameron, an Artist Date is “A block of time, perhaps two hours weekly, especially set aside and committed to nurturing your creative consciousness, your inner artist. In it’s most primary form, the artist date is an excursion, a play date that you preplan and defend against all interlopers.” From the book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron.
I try to make one at least once a week. Mine are anything from just going to a secluded spot on the beach and jumping around in the water to a visit to the Norton Simon with my camera. I will usually have my camera, (that’s right a real camera, not a phone), with me. If I see anything that intrigues me, pleases or excites me visually I will record it and sometimes it ends up in my studio.
Here’s a gallery of images from an exhibition that I saw at the Getty. They had recreated Tibetan Buddhists caves. It was amazing the accuracy and how peaceful and beautiful they were.
Even if you’re not an “artist”, however you want to define that, I highly recommend taking an Artist Date, and reading The Artist’s Way.
